What brand did you use? I've had great success with Meguiar's Ultimate Black and that was without finishing with an exterior trim sealant which you might need for better results.

Have you tried the heat gun trick?
When I had my Xterra I did all of the plastics and it lasted about a year.

Maybe you need to use a trim sealant afterwards? Check out ones by Wolfgang, the people on Autogeek swear by the brand.
